Sam Houston Race Park is prepared to return on short notice when the state says it is OK.

Though race tracks are not included in Gov. Greg Abbott's COVID-19 reopening rules and guidelines for Texas, Sam Houston Race Park has prepared to open on short notice.

"We don't know when word will come," said Dwight Berube, the track's vice president and general manager. "When it does, we'll be ready to go."

In anticipation of simulcast wagering resumption, SHRP has rearranged its main floor consistent with COVID-19 guidelines.

Wagering machines have been spaced at six-foot intervals, as have circle floor mats for those waiting in line to wager. Tables and chairs have also been moved apart by six feet. The readiness plan includes installing transparent plastic guards at wagering and concession windows.

The track plans to open only its main entrance and will place hygiene appeals there, including a request that anyone with COVID-19 symptoms not enter the facility.

SHRP has been closed since March 22, when it canceled the final four dates of thoroughbred season and its entire quarter horse meet. Live racing won't resume until January.
