Nottingham Forest has pulled off its biggest signing since clinching a return to the Premier League by bringing in Jesse Lingard on a free transfer. The England midfielder was available after ending his 22-year association with Manchester United during the offseason. Lingard is the 11th signing made by the promoted club as it prepares for a first season in the Premier League since 1999. The length of Lingard’s deal was not disclosed. The 29-year-old Lingard spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan at West Ham and scored nine goals in 16 starts in the league. He was linked with a permanent move to the London club.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference has four new coaches for this season, all in the same division. Duke's Mike Elko, Miami's Mario Cristobal, Virginia's Tony Elliott and Virginia Tech's Brent Pry are the new arrivals in the league's Coastal Division. That could lead to even…

Breakout rookie Julio Rodríguez and the Mariners can match a franchise record with their 15th consecutive win as they open a home series against AL West-leading Houston. Seattle went into the All-Star break a victory shy of matching the 2001 club for the franchise’s best run. They haven’t lost since July 1, and Rodríguez leads the team with 13 RBIs during the streak. Just about the only downside to Seattle’s surge is that Houston is 12-5 over that same period, keeping the Mariners 11 games back in the division race. All-Star Home Run Derby champion and trade deadline target Juan Soto rejoins his Nationals teammates to begin a series in Arizona.

The Texas Rangers are beginning to see the consistency they expected from their half-billion dollar infield. Corey Seager went on a homer surge before going to the All-Star Game. Marcus Semien has been steady since breaking out of his early slump. Manager Chris Woodward says he knew both players could handle the pressure after signing their blockbuster deals. Seager had seven homers over a 10-game span before the break, and the shortstop has 22 overall. Semien struggled through the first two months, but the second baseman is now hitting a season-best .242 with 13 homers.

The Washington Capitals made more changes to their roster this offseason than any contender in the NHL's Eastern Conference. Washington brought in two new goaltenders, traded for winger Connor Brown and signed a couple of forwards and a defenseman. The New York Rangers also made a splash by signing center Vincent Trocheck, and the Pittsburgh Penguins got better on the blue line by adding two-time Stanley Cup champion Jan Rutta to their established core. The Columbus Blue Jackets, with Johnny Gaudreau, and Ottawa Senators, with Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat, are among the teams that moved toward contending.

Han Xu grew up idolizing Yao Ming and the impact he had on basketball in China. The 22-year-old WNBA center with the New York Liberty hopes she can play a similar role in developing interest in women’s basketball in her home country. She may not have the skills yet to match Yao, the 7-foot-6 Hall of Fame center with the Houston Rockets. But the 6-10 Han hopes she can make an impact in the WNBA and “then transfer my influence back to my country and let more fans to see the performance from a Chinese player.”

Lewis Hamilton enters his 300th Formula One race at the French Grand Prix this weekend in the uncustomary position of chasing a first win this season. The seven-time world champion has a record 103 F1 wins and pole positions. The 37-year-old British driver also shares two records with fellow great Michael Schumacher: seven world titles and winning at least one race for 15 straight seasons. Schumacher’s run was from his debut season in 1992 until 2006, Hamilton’s since his first season in 2007. But Hamilton is without a win 12 races into this campaign. He is inching closer after three straight podium finishes.

Kelsey Plum and Nneka Ogwumike face off in a matchup of two of the WNBA's top scorers when Las Vegas and Los Angeles take the court. Saturday's game will be the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams. The Aces won the last matchup 79-73. Las Vegas is 12-2 against the Western Conference, and Los Angeles is 6-8 against conference opponents.

Mookie Betts broke an eighth-inning tie with a three-run homer and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 9-6 after blowing a five-run lead in the seventh. The NL West leaders won their fifth in a row and 12th in 13 tries, with the All-Star Game logos on the field nearly obliterated two nights after the Dodgers hosted the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 1980. Betts also made a spectacular diving catch on Joc Pederson’s liner in the right-field corner for the final out. San Francisco tied it on a grand slam by Darin Ruf in the seventh, then went ahead 6-5 in the eighth. Trayce Thompson’s RBI triple off Dominic Leone tied it 6-all with two outs in the bottom half.
